Paying a bill

In a nutshell

To pay a bill or make a payment to a company or supplier, you will first need to add them as a payee. To make it easier to set them up, a number of companies are already listed for you to select. However, you can also add any company as a payee provided you know their sort code and account number.

Your step-by-step guide: Paying an existing bill

  1. 01

    Open your mobile app.

  2. 02

    Tap on the account you wish to make a payment from.

  3. 03

    Tap on 'Payments'.

  4. 04

    Tap 'Make a payment'.

  5. 05

    Tap on 'Select payee' on Apple devices or 'Choose payee' on Android devices to search through your saved payees until you find the bill you want to pay. Enter the amount you want to pay and if you want to make to payment now or in the future.

    Tap ‘Make payment’ on Apple devices or ‘Next’ on Android devices to continue.

    * If you want to change the existing reference a daily limit of £750 will be applied and you may be asked to authorise the payment using your app's log in details.

  6. 06

    Check and confirm the payment details are correct and 'Make payment'.

  7. 07

    That’s your payment complete! 

    If you need a record of this payment simply tap 'Get PDF confirmation'.

Your step-by-step guide: New bill payment

  1. 01

    Open your NatWest app, tap on the account you want to make a payment from, select 'Payments' and then 'Make a payment'.

  2. 02

    Tap ‘Select payee’ on Apple devices or ‘Choose payee’ on Android devices and then tap 'Pay someone new' and enter the name and account details of the bill you want to pay.

    Use the reference number supplied by the company you are paying, so that they know it's from you.

    Choose the amount you want to pay and when you want the payment to be sent. Tap on ‘Make payment’ for Apple devices and ‘Next’ on Android devices

    For added security you may be asked to authorise this payment. If this happens you will see the ‘Authentication required’ screen. Just tap ‘Next’.

    Just re-enter your mobile app’s log in details, to re-confirm it’s you.

    Check the details on screen are correct then tap ‘Make payment’ on Apple devices and ‘Next’ on Android devices, then tap ‘Make payment’ again.

  6. 06

    Payment complete, you can save or send a PDF copy of the payment once it's sent if you want to keep a record of it.

Access to Online Banking

Your card reader

You may need the sort code and account number of the company you're paying, although our system is pre-filled with hundreds of companies' payment details

Your step-by-step guide:

    Log in to Online Banking

  2. 02

    Select 'Payments and transfers' from the left hand menu

  3. 03

    Select 'Make a payment or transfer' under the 'Make a payment or transfer' heading 

  4. 04

    Select 'Pay someone new'

  5. 05

    Start typing the company name. If it's a company we know, select their name from the list of suggestions and we'll fill in their account information for you – if not, continue typing the name to add them

  6. 06

    You should now be ready to pay your bill

    Note: You'll need a card reader

    Last thing - before paying a bill please make sure you have used the correct reference. This is normally your customer reference or the customer account number the bill issuer has provided

Your Online/Telephone banking PIN and password

You may be asked for the account number and sort code of the company you’re paying so have those handy

    When you call us on 03457 888 444 (International +44 8705 888 444), you will hear an automated menu where you can make a selection based on what you want to do

  2. 02

    Press 2 – this is the area for transactions and payments, this is the place to pay a bill

  3. 03

    Follow the steps and make sure when asked, you use a correct reference. This is normally your customer reference or account with your bill issuer

Your NatWest card

The account number and sort code of the company you are paying (incase we don’t have it on record)

If you need a helping hand paying your bill, you can come into a branch and one of our team will help you.

Make sure you bring the details of the company you’re paying. We may have them on record ourselves but it’s good to have the account number and sort code to make doubly sure.

Another way to pay a bill in branch is to use one of our iPads and send the money through Online Banking.

You will need to be registered for Online Banking. If you are already, then you’ll just need your password and PIN to login. We’ll be able to help you along the way.
