On the 6th of April 2016, the Personal Savings Allowance was launched. This means if you’re a basic rate taxpayer (paying 20% tax on income) you can earn £1,000 interest per tax year without paying tax on it. If you’re a higher rate taxpayer (paying 40% tax) you get a £500 Personal Savings Allowance. Additional rate taxpayers (paying 45% tax) don’t get any allowance. Savings Account Finder does not take into account your individual situation in relation to the Personal Savings Allowance. For more information on how this impacts you and your savings choices see Personal Savings Allowance.
The following terms are referenced in Savings Account Finder:
Annual Equivalent Rate (AER). This is a notional rate used for interest bearing accounts which illustrates the interest rate if paid and compounded each year. It helps you to compare the effective rates of credit interest on different accounts.
Gross Rate. This means the interest rate you are paid without the deduction of income tax.
p.a. Per annum (per year).
