Set up your holiday savings goal

It’s always nice having something to look forward to. So now the festive season’s over, the burning question is – where’s best for a winter break? Well here are some ideas.

Before you go

Let us know where you’re off to and when, at least 24 hours before your trip, and we'll do our best to ensure your holiday spending isn't affected at all. You can tell us online, through the mobile app, or over the phone. You can use your card abroad and to get cash out, but if you haven’t told us you’re away our fraud systems may think someone else is using your card and block the transaction.

For most people, price is an important consideration.

Obviously the further away you go the more your flight will cost. But many long-haul resorts also offer all-inclusive which takes care of meals and drinks and can help to bring down the overall cost.

Closer to home

Just a four-hour flight away, the Canary Islands are justifiably a very popular destination. With seven different islands to choose from, there’s something for everyone. Gran Canaria is a top choice for holiday makers, with its huge stretches of dunes, pine forests and sunshine galore. In addition to buzzy Playa del Ingles, popular resorts include its quieter neighbour San Augustin, sophisticated Maspolomas, and pretty Puerto Mogan.

Cape Verde has grown in popularity over recent years. Just an hour further on from the Canaries, its 10 islands are a beach lover’s paradise. But it also offers plenty of opportunities for island hopping, fishing, trekking and water sports.

And for those who prefer something rather more active, how about skiing? Around a third of British skiers and snowboarders head for the French Alps. With a huge choice of friendly, fun resorts, chic boutiques, glorious mountains, and tree-lined runs, the French Alps are home to some of the world’s greatest ski spots. Another draw is the fact that the flights into Grenoble and Chamonix are relatively short, giving you maximum time to check out the après ski opportunities and of course all that delicious food.

Further afield

According to the Happy Planet Index, Costa Rica is the world’s happiest country. Yet another reason to go visiting. With every trail leading to a spectacular waterfall, misty lake or jungle-fringed beach, it’s not only a beautiful place to explore, it has world-class infrastructure and amazing hotels from beachside lodges to a treehouse Boeing 747.

Florida’s alternative name - the sunshine state – says it all. As well as the famous theme parks, it has some of the best beaches north of the Caribbean, not to mention huge shopping malls and more restaurants per head than any other US state. It also has the Everglades which are perfect for exploring by boat or even hot air balloon.

For many, Barbados is their perfect idea of a winter sun destination. White powdery sand, palm-fringed beaches, gracious colonial hotels... or head inland and you’ll find even more – sugarcane plantations, pastel painted villages and roadside rum stores.
