NatWest current accounts Forms of ID we can accept

If you are applying for a current account online, we will try to open your account straight away.

To do this you need to have the following with you:

  • Credit or Debit Card
  • Passport or Driving Licence.
Where we can't complete your application online or if you don't have these, we may ask you to take ID and proof of address to your local branch.

If you need to go in to branch, or you would rather go in to branch to apply for a current account, you will need one item to confirm your identity, and another document that we can accept as proof of your address.


We can accept the below documents as proof of identity:

To be accepted, the following criteria must be met:

Provisional UK Licences included

To be accepted, the following criteria must be met:

  • Be a Full photocard licence (the paper counterpart is no longer valid as legal ID), issued in the UK, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland or EU member countries.
  • Be a provisional photocard licence, issued in the UK only.
  • Be a full 'old style' paper licence (before the photocard was introduced in 1998), issued in the UK only.

  • Match the date of birth used when applying

  • Be valid/in date

  • If sent from HMRC, must be:
    - Specific to the individual
    - Must include either NI number or date of birth

  • Match the exact name used when applying
  • Match the exact address used when applying
  • Be issued in the last 6 months or for the current tax year.
  • Can only be used as proof of identity or proof of address. Not both.

To be accepted, the following criteria must be met:

- Be an acceptable correspondence from the Benefits Agency:

  • Specific to the individual about benefits currently being received
  • Must Include either NI number or DOB
  • Must confirm the customer is currently in receipt of benefit.

 Examples are:

  • Job Seekers Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Incapacity Benefit
  • A letter from the Child Support Agency (CSA). The letter MUST confirm the payments are ongoing. This can be used for the recipient of the payments only and not the payer of the benefit.
  • Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) letter.
  • A benefits letter addressed to a carer but is for the person opening the account. This can be used as a last resort. The applicants name must be mentioned in the letter. The carer must reside at the same address as the applicant. 

  • Match the exact name used when applying
  • Match the exact address used when applying
  • Be valid/in date
  • Only be used as proof of address or proof of identity. Not both.

To be accepted, the following criteria must be met:

  • An immigration and National Directorate (IND) Registration Card:
    - Must match the exact name used when applying
    - Must match all other personal details used when applying
    - Only be provided if applicant is unemployed

  • A travel document issued by the Government of the UK and Northern Ireland:
    - Must match the exact name used when applying
    - Must match all other personal details used when applying
    - Be issued in the UK prior to 31 Dec 2004, if presented with a Grant of Status Letter or Entry Clearance Visa providing indefinite right to remain.
    - Still be in date, and have more than 3 months left to run.

  • An immigration status document:
    - Must match the exact name used when applying
    - Must match all other personal details used when applying
    - Be issued in the UK prior to 31 Dec 2004 if presented with a Grant of Status Letter or Entry Clearance Visa giving them indefinite right to remain AND a residence permit
    - Still be in date, valid and have more than 3 months left to run.

To be accepted, the following criteria must be met-

- Must match the exact name used when applying
- Must match the date of birth used when applying
- Be valid/in date
- The photo on the card must be a true likeness of yourself
- The card must contain your staff serial number

  • Police Warrant Card (Government Photo ID) 

To be accepted, the following criteria must be met-

- Must match the exact name used when applying
- Must match the date of birth used when applying
- Be valid/in date
- The photo on the card must be a true likeness of yourself
- The signature on the card must match the signature on the application
- The card must contain your police warrant number

  • UK Disabled Driver Card (Government Photo ID) 

To be accepted, the following criteria must be met-

- Must match the exact name used when applying
- Be valid/in date
-The photo on the card must be a true likeness of yourself

- 20 years old and under with no other form of ID
- Have special circumstances e.g. (Applicants in care homes, sheltered accomodation, permanent care, children's homes, in care and living at home).

  • Must exactly match the name used when applying
  • Must exactly match the date of birth used when applying
  • Be a Full or Abbreviated Birth Certificate or a Certified Copy of an Entry from the General Registry Office (England and Wales) or an Extract of an Entry in the Register of Births (Scotland)
NatWest current accounts ID we can accept for under 18s

We accept a wide range of documents as proof of ID. Proof of ID must also be accompanied by proof of address.

Important:

If the account is being opened in an adult's name proof of  identification and address is required for the adult and proof of identity for the child.

The surname of the adult and child does not need to match if the parent/guardian is a NatWest customer. If the surnames differ and the parent/guardian does not bank with us, you must provide documentation to show the link between the applicant child and parent/guardian.

To be acceptable this document must:

  • Be for an existing pupil of the school providing the letter
  • Be addressed to the Bank on headed paper or stamped by the school
  • Match the name on the application exactly
  • Match the date of birth on the application/request and be for a customer who is 18 years old or under.
  • Match the address the application
  • Be issued by a known school.
Please note that one letter is sufficient to cover both proof of identity and proof of address for the same application
