How our Switch Service works

Switching bank accounts from one UK bank or building society to another is simple with our Current Account Switch Service. It takes just 7 working days.

On your switch date:

Your payments, such as Direct Debits, Standing Orders and Bill Payments, will all transfer to your new account.

Any money from your old account will have been transferred (for example, your salary).

Your new account will be ready to use.

Your old account will be closed. Don’t worry if any payments are made to your old account after your switch date, they’ll be automatically redirected or forwarded to your new account. 

If anything goes wrong with the switch, we will refund any interest (paid or lost) and charges made on either your old or new current accounts as a result of this.

How will you manage the switch for me?

As your new current-account provider we offer the following:


•  Firstly, our expert team will manage the whole process for you.
•  If any payments are made to your old account after your switch date, they'll be automatically redirected to your new account. We will also contact the sender and give them your new account details.
•  We will keep you up to date on how your switch is going with texts and emails. We will also give you a phone number so you can ask questions whenever you need to.
•  If there are any issues in making the switch, we will contact you before your switch date.

Do I have to close my old account?

Yes, your new bank will automatically close down your old account as part of the 7 day switching process. 

 

This allows any payments made to your old account to be automatically redirected to your new account. You can switch and keep the old account open if you want to, but you won’t be able to use the Current Account Switch Service – so you won’t get any of the benefits detailed in the Current Account Switch Guarantee. 

What if I only want to move just some of my Direct Debits?

If you want to move just one Direct Debit from another bank you need to contact the supplier who you pay the direct debit to and provide them with updated details to take the Direct Debit from your NatWest bank account. Find out more about setting up Direct Debits.

If the switch is delayed for any reason, can I use my new account straight away? 

Yes, if the new account is open and you have money in it (or an overdraft agreed) then you can use it.

Can I switch my bank account if I am overdrawn?

Yes you can switch bank accounts if your are overdrawn, and we may be able to provide facilities to help you pay off any overdraft, subject to our normal lending criteria.

 

If an arranged overdraft limit is agreed, this may not match that offered by your old bank. If this isn’t the case you must make separate arrangements to repay your old bank or building society what you owe. Please be aware that if your old bank do receive any future credits, they may keep these to offset what you still owe them.
